WEST Midlands Metro (WMM) conducted the first tram test-run over its Birmingham Westside extension towards Centenary Square in the early hours of August 30.
‘Urbos 3’ tram No. 28 was running on battery power for the test as this section through the city centre west of Grand Central (New Street station) will not have overhead wires.

This is claimed to be the first time a UK tram has used battery power to run along a modern tram line.
