PASSENGERS delayed by late-running trains will be able to claim compensation more easily under changes proposed by the Office of Rail and Road. A new operators’ licence condition will require the companies to conform with a code of practice which would mean passengers receiving ‘clear information about their entitlements to compensation both before and during the journey’. The companies would also have to improve the way they handle claims, and publish statistics revealing how well they are doing. A consultation has been launched and will run until 28 August. The move follows an announcement that there were 6.3 million claims for delays in 2019-20, up 17.6 per cent from the previous year. However the ORR says only one in three of eligible passengers actually make a claim, and this low figure is being blamed on a lack of information from operators.
