Coming up in the February issue of The RM: Freightliner wins massive Mendip stone contract

FREIGHTLINER scored a major coup in December when it secured one of the country’s biggest railfreight contracts.

From November, it has replaced DB Cargo as the operator of Mendip Rail bulk stone trains, hauling around eight million tonnes every year from north Somerset to various terminals in London and the south-east of England.

The eight Mendip Rail Class 59s have been sold to Freightliner as part a new long-term deal which sees the operator replace DB Cargo on one of the country’s most important railfreight contracts. The long-term contract involves the haulage of around 107,000 wagon loads per year from the Hanson and Aggregate Industries (AI) quarries at Whatley and Merehead to Acton Yard in west London, where block trains are split for local distribution.

The materials are used in construction projects such as road building and housing developments in and around London.
