THE ranks of preserved operational steam locomotives increased over the weekend of March 2-3 when two former Barry Scrapyard hulks were formally welcomed back into service at different ends of the country.
The launch of the 150th ex-Barry engine to return to steam – ‘Modified Hall’ No. 6989 Wightwick Hall – took place at the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre on March 2 in front of a small gathering of 6989 Wightwick Hall Restoration Group members, supporters and invited guests.
Among these was Rod Thomas, who was one of the founders of the restoration group four decades earlier.
Unusually, there was no formal ceremony, and instead No. 6989 shuttled up and down with two Mk1s and Hawksworth 0-6-0PT No. 9466.
