Police rule out arson in Troon station blaze

THE train service between Glasgow Central and Ayr has been suspended until further notice, after fire swept through a building at Troon station on Saturday.

Services from Glasgow Central to Ayr will start and terminate at Kilwinning, and ScotRail warned that no alternative transport would be provided today.

The fierce blaze began in the ticket office on platform one and then spread into the roof, badly damaging the building as well as an overhead power cable. ScotRail and Network Rail have closed the line until the structural integrity of the damaged building has been assessed.

The fire service was called to the station in Barassie Street around midday on Saturday, and it was several hours before the blaze could be brought under control. No-one was injured.

Although the cause is unknown, police have confirmed that the fire was not started deliberately.

Meanwhile, the Railway Heritage Trust has offered a grant of £500,000 to help pay for repairs.

The present Troon station was opened in 1892. It was designed by architect James Miller, whose work also includes Glasgow Royal Infirmary and some other stations on the Scottish west coast.
