Overnight derailment blocks Portsmouth depot

A TRAIN has become derailed during a shunting move at South Western Railway’s Fratton traincare depot, near Portsmouth.

At least one vehicle left the rails while the train was being moved at low speed at 01.30 this morning. No one was hurt, but some trains have been trapped in the depot.

The train has since been rerailed, but SWT said the incident caused some damage to the track which must now be repaired before the depot can be fully reopened.

SWT warned that disruption was likely to continue throughout the day, and that some Portsmouth Harbour services might have to be cancelled or amended.

An investigation has been launched.
